An ultrastructural study of follicular ameloblastoma


Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to observe the ultrastructure of follicular ameloblastoma under the light and the electron microscope.
4 patients, proved to the follicular type ameloblastoma after the incisional biopsy, were employed in this study.
These specimens were excised, and decalcificed in 0.1M EDTA with 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution for two weeks. And then the specimens were rinsed with phosphate buffer solution and the post fixation, the dehydration in alcohol series, cleaned with propylene oxide and embedded in Epon 812 resin. Ultrathin section were made and the tumor structure were observed with transmission electron microscope.
The results were as follows,
1. In the light microscopic view, the epithelial cell layer of the tumor were divided to the peripheral layer and central layer.
The peripheral layer were composed of the columnar, cuboidal cells. Nucleoli were highly polarized. The central layer were composed of the stellate-reticulum like cells with increasing amout of intercellular space.
2. In the electron microscopic view, the peripheral columnar cells were appeared that the nucleoli in the cells outnumbered the cytoplasm in the ratio.
Within the cytoplasm, intercellualr organelles were increased and cytoplasm was decreased. The central star-shaped cells were appeared that the nucleus morphology were seen by spindle shape.
3. In the connective tissue stroma, epithelium-connective tissue jucuon was intact and observed the abundunt collagen fiber bundles and fibroblasts were observed in the stroma.
4. The follicular ameloblastoma resembled that of a normal developing enamel organ.
